Usability - need to click save on each pane of settings

Almost each time I install a new build of Serviio I find that FFMPEG locks up while attempting to generate thumbnails for video content as it's added to the library. Not sure why, because PS3 Media Server uses FFMPEG on the fly to generate thumbnails for content as it's being browsed in folders and I never had that problem on this same old PC. I may report back with the command line it uses.

Anyway - the reason I wrote this post - when I first run the console, I go through and set my preferences and click save (turning off video thumbnailing). However, it seems that you have to remember to click save on each pane, which isn't all that intuitive. Next time I start the service I find it's back to running FFMPEG for thumbnails of each video (which locks up - I don't see any media actually being added in the debug log and my CPU is at 100% with two FFMPEG processes). Normally on a UI like this you go through making all your changes and the save button commits them for all panes. Could I suggest that this is changed for the next version?

Hmm. Actually it seems that it retained my prefs for the transcoding pane, just not the metadata pane. Could this be a bug then, rather than intentional?

It should retain your settings, but I assume you dropped the DB because of previous beta, so in that case you have to do it all again.

Clicking Save on each tab is a part of the design and would cause too much hassle to change ATM. I'll prioritize other things.

Yeah I installed from fresh again this morning, but I was pretty sure I had clicked on Save on each pane. Perhaps I had missed it. However, I think it will catch people out so it would be a good thing to add to a future version, especially as this FFMPEG locking up during thumbnail creation may give some people the impression that Serviio isn't working. I'll track down the command line PS3 Media Server uses for that and compare to yours tonight.

I also noticed that dts transcoding works when downmixing to stereo, but not if you try to preserve the original channel count. I get "unsupported audio stream" reported by the Sony BDP and very brief bursts of garbage audio. I guess that the dts parts of FFMPEG are rough around the edges. I hadn't noticed earlier because I just use my TV's speakers so normally have it set to 2 channel.

Maybe a red text string saying "Not saved" just above the button would be an easier alternative? That way you can see it's not saved when you return to tab. I think I lost an hour of my life on this :)

When tab is modified, save button becomes "enabled", when save button is pressed and configurations/modifications are saved, the button becomes "disabled" (gray).
For me, its good as is.

Re: Usability - need to click save on each pane of settings

It's the only UI I've seen where each tab requires separate saving. Once you know what to look for it's easy to spot the enable Save button but an extra hint in the form of color or text will probably save many man-hours of lost time in both support and users trying to figure out what's wrong.
