Streaming Status Feature

What would be nice is to see a small transcoding stream status box for each connected client in the Serviio console. Maybe coloured text that shows things like "Not streaming", "Connection to source successful/failed", "Transcoding Status In Progress/Failed" and a counter of the number of frames transcoded so far. This would be very handy for online streams, without having to dig through logfiles.

Has already been discussed by the develpor and testers and there's no room within the console for this feature at the moment

Re: Streaming Status Feature
What bout an API for third party console (like ServiiDroid) to get the information
Its would be nice to see something like Active Renderer - Active transcosding/stream
Example
"Sony Bravia (2010) - Streaming 4oD Copper S01 E02"
this information can be seen in debug logs, so think it will be easy to implement

I don't see any added vlue for the usual user in this. Also would not be trivial to implement.

When Art mix with Technical then it will be "Windows". If Art first then Technical second it will be "Mac". When Technical ignore Art it always synonym to "Linux"

So what is your main target users. Linux?

Re: Streaming Status Feature
While serviio may be used by a lot of technical people, I'm guessing zip wants it to be normal user friendly, and as hard as it may be to belive, normal people don't care whats going on, they just want it to work.

I am in agreement with that. It is when something doesn't work, that I do care what is going on. It would be nice to just as easily look at something/anything in the console to troubleshoot why it isn't working without having to become a techie to dive into Windows/Linux to do it. Is it failing because the the URL or feed is simply invalid and Serviio can't connect to it? Is a plugin finding a problem when parsing out the stream? Is the video stream in a unsupported format? Did some sort of timeout occur? Things like that.
It sounds like displaying the logs or even a tail of the logs in the console has been discussed before and deemed unworkable. Such a feature doesn't have to be on the main screen. It could be activated in a pop-up window controlled by a show/hide log button.

It's actually this exact feature I've just joined the forum to ask about! True, a lot of 'normal' people won't be interested, but it usually the residential techie that /has/ to worry about this sort of thing. Most 'normal' people wouldn't have a streaming media server to begin with!
As both the boxes I have streaming media from do double-duty with other functions, I would like to be able to interrogate the Seviio service to find out if there are actually any files being streamed out at that time, and if not I know it's safe to do upgrades, restart, generally fiddle about without annoying anyone mid-programme.

is it really that hard to look at a logfile? did not realise that counted as being techie :s and with so many experts here (zip, illico, patters, will, me, jhb50, moltra) and extensive wiki (growing every day nearly) and faq pages, even the most complex issues can be sorted with little trouble.

Well, of course I'm not, but it does appear that you're idea of a 'normal' home user and what's really a normal home user are a little different in terms of technical nouse! I would argue that out of the 4941 members of this forum, the majority are probably not uber-technical, but are at least more knowledgeable than your average home user. The very fact they're here means they're already a few hurdles down the line from simple home gaming and shopping, are already familiar with several more technical aspects of home streaming, transcoding, networking, and storage, and been interested/stuck/dedicated enough to join the forum. To suggest I think 'all' members are techies is pointlessly fractious and ultimately beside the point.

And I could eliminate the point in streaming media at all by printing off scripts and getting my family to act it all out...

i know exactly how much knowledge the Average user has thanks, been in the industry a long time and to be honest u can argue till your blue in the face the decision has been made by the developer that this will NOT be added.

TBH, I'm not here to get in a pi55ing contest with anyone over who knows 'their public' better. Seems like the kind of argument a 7 year old might employ. I'm also not arguing for the reopening of any idea to be implemented, just making my point that it would have been a feature of usefulness to a certain chunk of users, me included. It quite plainly makes very little difference to you, but personally it would be a feature that if another bit of free streaming software did implement it might be enough to make me move to it. I know every end-users requirements and experiences would be different, but that's just one on my list that would be a higher priority.

RIP PS3 Media Server

Here is the reason why i need it, my daughter uses Serviio in her room, she watched alot of stuff that needs transcoding. Serviio cant transcode two files at the same time.
If i need to watch something from Serviio i have to go all the way to my daughters room to check serviio is not transcoding/streaming, and the same with her, she has to check with me.
So if i had a Status, i would know what she is watching, if she is just streaming or transcoding (i have resort to Twonky if she is

So the reason this is a valid feature:
-Parents can check their children's viewing
-Check if someone else is transcoding using Serviio in your home
-Just will be nice to know whats going on (it was something i did keep eye on when i used to use ps3ms)
-can check if transcoding is complete on file, sometimes when playing a file i want to skip to the middle but give serviio time to transcode so have to guess how much its transcoded
-could identify any buffering issues if you include speed (yes illico another trip down memory lane)
-if in future you have the option to stop the ffmpeg transcoding/running process, this can be seen in the status
-cant think of anymore but it will be nice to have
