Improved browsing experience

Hi,

I cannot thank enough for Serviio. I am coming from SageTV and Serviio was a great replacement when watching or listening to media directly on my Samsung UN46D8000 without now discontinued SageTV HD extender.

Even though I appreciate all the features Serviio offers (Movies, Actors, etc.) when browsing media, these are quite confusing for my family (kids) especially since they do not always work 100%. My media is logically organized in the folders and therefore we use only the Folder access. I was wondering if it would be possible to add the following features/options to simplify browsing experience:

1. Option to do not display any other "browsing access" other than Folders. E.g. "Display only folder hierarchy". If this option is selected, even the Folders would not be displayed and only the content would be directly displayed.
2. Option to do not show the top folder. E.g. if I select that /data/Videos contains all my videos and I browse to "Folders" top level menu, the next content under neath it would not be Videos, but it would be the content of folder /etc/Videos. E.g. "Display root folder content directly".
3. Allow tracking of what media were watched and which were not and then allow browsing based on this criteria. E.g the top level folders for videos would be "Not watched / Recently watched (24 hours) / Recently watched (7 days) / All" and below would be the usual hierarchy (possibly considering the requests 1 and 2) filtered based on this setting. If I start watching the media, it would be then considered watched. The recently watched option would allow me to locate media which I start watching but have not finished.

Thank you so much for your consideration. I am also quite capable coder in case you need help with any of these.

Re: Improved browsing experience

1) and 2) I can help you with these. all of these function are availible from thr PRESENTATION tab of the serviio console. :) i dont have an image for you to follow at the moment as im at work away from my server but as soon as i get home i will post you an image of exactly how to set the page so it does how you require. :)

3) There is no way to do this and sadly wont be included in future version of serviio.

Re: Improved browsing experience

also, if you just want a flat view on all your files (therefore not utilizing your folder structure), why do you gothrough Folders category and not, for example, Movies category.

Re: Improved browsing experience

I would like to see the possibility to list all of my audio files on one category level, sorted first by artist, then by album and third by track number. This would correspond to the flattening of category level "A, B, C" and the album name category level under the artist catagory. Would it be possible to configure this in the console the way that one can with the higher levels in the folder structure (display category/display content only)?

Hi, thank you for the pointers. I have looked at the presentation tab and found what you have mentioned. This is exactly what I needed. In relation to 3, why do you think there is no way to do it? Is it technical limitation or project focus? I already see the folders "recently watched" and "recently added" so it seems like my suggestion for #3 is along the same lines, it just take it much further.

Re: Improved browsing experience

it would be different for every device so if u have more than one device in your house each one would have different details.

plus if u have more than one person in your house, then they may have watched files that you havent making keeping track to the exent you want impossible.

Hi, Not sure I understand your comments about different details from different devices? I would imagine that capturing the act of playing media would be the same for any device. Am I too naive?

You are spot on about issue of support for multiple users. On the other hand coming from SageTV world, this was one of the most popular functions among users, regardless that Sage didn't support this feature for more than one user (it doesn't even now unless you use one user created beta plugin). The reason is that many times the Genres differentiations takes care of various users. Kids watch Children programming, Husbands watch Action flicks and Family watches drama. The usage pattern takes care of the missing functionality in most cases.
