Transcoding to MKV with burned in subs from ext srt

Hi,

I'm new to all of this and trying to get started. What I'd like to do is to set up Serviio in such a way that I can access stuff from it on a Panasonic VIera with DLNA. On top of that, I'd like it to force transcode with hard sub, drawing from an external file.

I'm not asking anyone to help me do this from scratch, but the amount of info here is kind of intimidating. What are the questions I should be asking to get started? How can I answer these for myself?
