How to connect to a folder in an external drive?

I wish to connect Serviio to en external SSD where I keep all my videos. I am running Monterey on a new Mac Studio.
However, when I try to connect via LIBRARY/SHARED FOLDERS I can find no listing of external VOLUMES, only innumerable lists of obscure folders, all of which are on my home drive.
Even an alias of a folder on the external drive is not listed. What is the point of a home server if I cannot even connect it to external drives?

I'm not familiar with the MacOS, so what I say might or might not be applicable. Serviio by default runs under a system user account, and that account might not have access to an external drive. But I have to ask, what exactly do you mean by external? Is it a USB drive connected directly to the Mac, or is it something being accessed across your network? That system user account usually cannot access network resources without some permissions tweaking.
If the external drive is only available/visible to your user account, you would have to change the user account that Serviio uses to your account. I can't tell you how to do that on a Mac, but I know it can be done.

I found this thread from a couple years back and it seemed to work. I had to uninstall Java first and reinstall it, then give it permission for full disk access, restart my mac, and the external SSD appeared under the Volumes tab!
Hope this helps!
