Need help with Serviio - is this a good place to ask?

I was hoping there would be a Serviio subreddit, but there's only one post in there, so now I'm looking further afield, sorry if this isn't the right place.

I have a HTPC (windows 7) set up in my lounge room with a hard drive connected filled with video and music files (many different formats). Recently I purchased a smart TV with DLNA capabilities for my bedroom so I could stream from my HTPC in there.

I had a half arse muck around with both vlc and windows media server to try and get this happening but neither seemed to work, so tonight I downloaded serviio. I've added the media files to the library and the server appears on my smart TV, but when I try and select it I get the error "Loading the DLNA resource failed" and that's it.

Can anyone shed some light on what I'm doing wrong? Or point me to a better subreddit to ask in? Thanks192.168.0.1 routerlogin 192.168.l.l

This is likely the best place to look for help. After all, it's offered by the Serviio developer himself. :D (no, that's not me)

First, we need additional detail. What model Smart TV do you have? They all have different DLNA capabilities, which is why Serviio has numerous profiles written for specific devices.

Windows Media Server is a lousy DLNA server. It can only transcode a limited number of titles, it doesn't retrieve metadata, and overall is worthless in my personal opinion. I've completely disabled it on my computers so it's not even advertised on the network. VLC is a great video player, but it has its limitations, mostly because there aren't versions available for many devices.

So, what version of Serviio are you using? V2.1 is the latest one available. What profile is assigned in the Serviio console to your TV? Serviio attempts to assign the correct profile, but isn't always successful. Does anything play, even partially with only video or sound? What sort of media formats do you have? Remember that MP4, MPG and MKV are just containers, and they might have different video and audio codecs within them.

Once we get the basics established, we can see what plays and what doesn't, and go from there.
