Re: serviio installed on router

Unless the router runs on Linux and allows installion of 3rd party programs, it would be possible. Would need a fast processor to transcode video though.

The other way you can - buy/build a NAS(Network Attached Storage), these are capable to run 24/7. My NAS server sit side to side with my router.

Popular NAS companies are QNAP, Synology, Thecus, ReadyNAS - these NAS's has ready made packages/modules to install Serviio very easily without you trying to compile it yourself, just like the Windows/Mac installers.
Advantage having a NAS, it can hold alot of storage depending on what NAS you buy.

The cheapest option is running Serviio on Raspberry Pi (costs £25/$25) that can be connected to your router.
Sony Bravia 2010 52NX803 - Sony PS3 - Xbox 360
Serviio running on QNAP NAS 639 Pro - 1.6 Intel Dual Core - 2GB RAM and QNAP NAS 121 - 2Ghz ARM Marvell - 1GB RAM
Console using ServiiDroid for Android, ServiiMetro and ServiiWP for Windows Phone and WebUI for iOS

Re: serviio installed on router

Serviio on raspberry pi, you need to get the version of raspbian that supports java that Serviio requires. I can't remember of the top of my head but standard raspbian won't run jre. Google it, hard v soft floating point raspbian for pi.
