Subtitle for mkv files and streaming of web contents...

Hi ,

I am a big fan of Serviio. Really a big thank you to the Serviio Team.

I compared with many other dlna s/w but no compare with Serviio.

I have a Panny viera G20 and I stream videos from my laptop wire lessly to the TV.

These are the features I would like to see in the next version.

Subtitle for MKV files . ( Currently PS3 media server support subtitle for MKV but not Serviio)

Contents from Web.( I know some media servers are allowing , but the issue is since the most of the media are of flash file type which my TV's inbuilt media player can not play.). If anything can be done on that side.

I would be very happy if I will be given a chance to be a beta tester of new version.

Thanks

With serviio, there were two way for subtitles:
- delivered natively the mkv with subtitle embedded but renderer (TV) must support this.
- delivered *.srt subtitle resource with the video stream resource in parallel but renderer must also support this.

Serviio/FFmpeg does not support subtitle burning into the video stream.

I also know that FFmpeg could remux the subtitle into the transport stream, so this could be a serviio enhancement.

See example:
Source files : TESTavi and TEST.srt

C:\Serviio\lib\ffmpeg.exe
-i "TEST.avi" -i "TEST.srt"
-vn -an -sn -f mpegts "TEST.ts" -y -threads 2 -copyts
-vcodec mpeg2video -b 17000k -maxrate 17000k -bufsize 5097k -r 24000/1001 -g 15 -map 0:0 -newvideo
-acodec ac3 -ab 192k -ac 2 -map 0:1 -newaudio
-scodec copy -map 1:0 -newsubtitle

Of course, renderer (TV) must support this too.

Re: Subtitle for mkv files and streaming of web contents...

Another remuxing example:
From ElephantsDream-DivXPlusHD.mkv file
Input #0, matroska,webm, from 'ElephantsDream-DivXPlusHD.mkv':
...
Stream #0.0(eng): Video: h264 (High), yuv420p, 1920x1080, PAR 1:1 DAR 16:9, 24 fps, 24 tbr, 1k tbn, 48 tbc (default)
Stream #0.1(eng): Audio: aac, 48000 Hz, 5.1, s16 (default)
Stream #0.2(eng): Audio: aac, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16
Stream #0.3(eng): Subtitle: [0][0][0][0] / 0x0000
Stream #0.4(fre): Subtitle: [0][0][0][0] / 0x0000
Stream #0.5(ger): Subtitle: [0][0][0][0] / 0x0000
Stream #0.6(ita): Subtitle: [0][0][0][0] / 0x0000
Stream #0.7(pol): Subtitle: [0][0][0][0] / 0x0000
Stream #0.8(rus): Subtitle: [0][0][0][0] / 0x0000
Stream #0.9(spa): Subtitle: [0][0][0][0] / 0x0000
...

We could remux into transport stream, video/audio 5.1/ French subtitles
C:\Serviio\lib\ffmpeg.exe
-i "ElephantsDream-DivXPlusHD.mkv"
-vn -an -sn -f mpegts "TEST.ts" -y -threads 2 -copyts
-vcodec copy -vbsf h264_mp4toannexb -map 0:0 -newvideo
-acodec ac3 -ab 192k -ac 2 -map 0:1 -newaudio
-scodec copy -map 0:4 -newsubtitle

Stream mapping:
Stream #0.0 -> #0.0
Stream #0.1 -> #0.1
Stream #0.4 -> #0.2

Hay,
what i do generally is keep srt file in the same name of the video file.
The issue is subtitle comes fine for avi files but not mkv files.

But it is good if i run the video through PS3 media server.

Re: Subtitle for mkv files and streaming of web contents...

PS3ms uses MEncoder to transcode video with subtitles burned to it so any renderer works to view subtitles.
We may have to wait till ffmpeg decides to add this feature.
