Is JPG the only file type supported for the local poster?
Basically would like a image that supports transparency so I can create a local DVD cover image that would not get squished by Samsungs Blu-ray renderer.
Or is this type of thumbnail not supported by the DLNA spec?

It is supported, I'll move this topic into feature requests forum.
However, I'm not sure if the image will be properly displayed on your TV (with the transparency).

For kicks I tried a .gif and .png but image was not picked up.
Appreciate if support was added even if just in a test version to see if it works.

It's supported by DLNA but not implemented in Serviio (yet).
