Online vs Offline Metadata

Another thought I wll give voice to. I would like to use online metadata for my commercial movie backups and .nfo files to provide descriptive data for my home movies (all with genre "Home Movie" for example). As I understand it this cannot currently be done - you would either need to create .nfo files for every commercial movie, or forego any metadata for your home movies.

One method I thought of achieving this is to add another column to to the Shared Folders area. Basically I propose that the "M" column be replaced with an "O" and "X" column:

  • the "O" column is then used to signify that on-line metadata retrieval is required for that folder and all subfolders.
  • the "X" column is then used to signify that eXternal metadata retrieval (.nfo files, Swisscenter or My Movies) is required for that folder and all subfolders.
  • If both columns are unchecked no descriptive metadata is required.
  • Code would need to prohibit both categories being checked.
This would also mean that the dropbox on the Metadata, Video tab could be re-defined to be only for external sources - ie. it becomes "ways to retrieve external metadata" and could be simplified to only include .nfo files, Swisscenter or My Movies (no need for "No descriptive metadata" as that case is covered where checkboxes aren't selected).

Re: Online vs Offline Metadata

A little different - if I read it correctly that bitbucket was suggesting (a) a hierarchical system, including online sources in the hierarchy, or (b) using a special form of the filename for a video to trigger the use of local (offline) metadata. I am suggesting that it be folder based - that a user can flag some folders as using online data and other folders to use local sources. Don't need to worry about hierarchy or special filenames then. Just another option for you to consider... :)

ps. I also think including online sources in a hierarchical system would be a good idea, but as I understand it this could be problematic (eg. if the online site is temporarily down, or slow to respond). For this reason it would only probably work if the online source is the last in the hierarchy (ie. if a local source exists, use it according to the hierarchy, otherwise use online). Even in this case though I wonder how slow a hierarchical system with online sources might make a library update.
