Portable Serviio

Hi,

I often would like to just run Serviio a single time on various laptops but not install it. Especially on Windows I don't like the idea to install a a service and boot every time Serviio every time the OS starts just to be able to serve some files for ~1 hour. Obviously I could uninstall Serviio after use but for various reasons I would prefer to have a portable version.

I just want to start Serviio and close it after use and no files are left in the registry, no services running, no entries in the autostart. The OS shouldn't ever know that there was Serviio installed.

Is such a portable Serviio possible to do?

Cheers,
Sampy

Re: Portable Serviio

Sure, just take a copy of the installed Serviio and copy it somewhere else. Then run serviio.bat instead of the service whenever you want.

Re: Portable Serviio

Cool. Thanks!!!

Maybe you still want to offer a Portable Version Download on your page? Otherwise I always have to install and uninstall a new version when it comes out to have the latest Portable Edition.

Btw, when I start Serviio.bat on a system without installing Serviio, will it still start a service? Can I be sure this service is removed after I close Serviio?

On a different note...why do you use a Service on Windows? Is pure Java impossible?

Cheers,
Samply

Re: Portable Serviio

Just copy it onto a usb stick and carry it around with you. Now thats portable  Ill try and get a portable version up asap but you will still have to install Java as a seperate service on the target machine although most have it installed already

Re: Portable Serviio

To make a truly portable version for windows, you could try running serviio with jportable available from portable apps - http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/java_portable

With this it should be possible to run everything from a usb stick without installing anything on the computer

Re: Portable Serviio

It's ok for serviio program but how would behave the moved library?
I don't think you'll get the same media in the same place on every computer :?
Every media path is absolute so the library should update everytime you connect your USB stick...

Re: Portable Serviio

You could have the media on the usb stick and either hope the stick gets mapped to the same drive each time, or somehow update the library with the drive the usb stick has got mapped to
Or just use online sources for media
